Say What?


PULLING THE WOOL OVER SOMEONE’S EYES goes back to the days when all gentlemen wore powdered wigs like the ones still worn by the judges in British courts. The word wool was then a popular, joking term for hair … The expression ‘pulling the wool over his eyes’ came from the practice of tilting a man’s wig over his eyes, so he couldn’t see what was going on.

Prior to 1582, the new year began on April 1st.  When the new year was moved to January 1st in 1582, there were some people who hadn’t heard or didn’t care to change the date, so they continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1st and were called April Fools.
